DESIGN

User Friendly: How the Hidden Rules of Design Are Changing the Way We Live, Work, and Play

by Cliff Kuang and Robert Fabricant

There were so many mixed feelings when I finished reading this book. Frightened, when reading the tragedies in the past like the Three Mile Island Accident. Stunned, when knowing at the time, that working-class citizens were finally willing to come to the Cinemas just because the red carpet was removed, eliminating its exclusivity. Shocked and miserable, knowing the creator behind the "Like" button feels miserable at the end. Hopeful, knowing so many individuals or organizations want to make a better impact through design & technology.

What do all these things have in common? Yes, Design. Either in good, or bad terms. From one tragedy, it can be a turning point for the industry to make better improvements in the future. From one phenomenon, it can be a learning point to make a slight change that has a big impact in return. From one app feature, could bring joyful experiences or horrible outcomes. This book kind of reminds designers to be more responsible with what they design and build.

PRODUCTIVITY

Atomic Habits

by James Clear

So far, I can say this book has been successfully had many good impacts on me. From this book, I learned that no matter how small the progress, that's totally fine. Because the key is your persistence. I started tying my shoelaces and got my 1km walking again after years of absence. I started building design kits as my side projects. I started reading a page of book on weekdays.

Now, I regularly get 4km during my afternoon jogging on weekdays. I built and launched 4 design kits (3 Framer templates, and 1 Figma UI Kit). I finished reading 3 books in a year (2 more books than the previous year). It might be not that grand, but for me, it's way more than I could imagine to achieve this.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Alex Ferguson - Autobiografi Saya

by Sir Alex Ferguson

One of the most glorious figures in football history. All of his achievements during his time at Manchester United came from many sacrifices, persistence, and always aiming for the top. He could be the most feared opponent by the rivals, by always showing determination during the press conference and surely during the 90-minute battle on the field. Even his players if there is a chance they don't obey the rules established by him.

But, that's one of his sides. The other side of him is a father figure who gives a warm welcome to every young talent who aiming for the top as him. The class of '92 consists of exceptional players like Beckham, Scholes, and Giggs. Also, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo, are just a few examples of many players who finally reached their full potential lead by him. This is a must-read book for you who want to learn about leadership, staying with important values, and being a robust figure.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Shoe Dog - A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE

by Phil Knight

In this book, Phil Knight tells, that even with his very busy schedule building NIKE, always tried to spend time with his children, to tell a story before their bedtime. Surprisingly, I have this kind of feeling when reading this book: got my exciting story before my bedtime, and can't wait for my tomorrow story. His journey exploring the world before they started building NIKE, the history between him and Onitsuka, and the warm relationship between him and every NIKE athlete are just some exciting parts of this book.

The most essential part: Phil Knight shares his story of always aiming for the win. Even if you feel it's impossible, just try not to lose, and always keep moving. The time he was trained by his Coach Bowerman to achieve his running milestone during the college day, his persistence in building NIKE from day one, and defending his product and company from many threats are the examples he showed that he never planned to lose. He always wants to win until the last second.
